Our district is known for the craftsmanship and diversity of handicrafts. Among the handicrafts of this district, Kanthastic, shola pith work, leathercraft, batik, Dokra, etc. are famous. Some of these arts are now lost or disappear like the famous sherpai of Lokpur and the Lacquerd craft work of Ilambazar. The traditional woodwork and clay work that used to be done in Silpa Sadana is no longer seen today. We are seven Students of (Kala Bhavan and Silpa Sadana) Certificate Courses in have come together for the recovery of these lost crafts and the overall development of this field. Initially, we intended to use the money earned by working job work on someone’s art for a few days of the month, to be used for the
restoration of the lost craft. After working in this way for some time, a society named Birbhum Artisani was formed on 10th September 2013 to organize various exhibition workshops for the overall betterment of the rural masses for women’s self-reliance and livelihood and to create interest in handicrafts.
